What it does
Google's take on deep research: Gemini autonomously works through up to hundreds of sites, reasons over what it finds and assembles a multi-page report in minutes. The twist is that you can plug in your personal sources: Gmail, Drive, Chat (or stick to web search only). The report can then be turned into an interactive piece, a quiz or an Audio Overview in Canvas.
How to set it up
- Open gemini.google.com → pick Deep Research in the input bar.
- Use Sources to add sources (Google Search by default; you can add Gmail/Drive or, the other way round, keep only those).
- Available on paid Gemini plans (Google AI Pro/Ultra and the business tiers).
When to use it
- ✅ A deep dive into a topic spanning many sources — especially when part of the data lives in your Gmail or Drive.
- ✅ You want a report plus the option to turn it straight into an audio overview or a quiz.
- ❌ A quick answer — use regular Gemini; a narrow scientific synthesis — Consensus.
Example
"Go through my Gmail thread about project X and public sources, and put together a status report: what's done, the risks, the next steps" — Gemini walks the emails and the web and hands back a structured document.
