Udio

What it is and who it's for

Udio is a music generator built by former Spotify researchers — the second largest after Suno and tuned for control over sound quality. It's for producers and musicians who want more than a one-button track: the ability to surgically fix what's already there, selecting a two-second fragment and re-generating only that. What sets it apart is inpainting (Magic Edit) — nothing else has it — and a clean licensing story after the Universal Music Group deal.

Key capabilities

  • Inpainting / Magic Edit: fix a selected section (lyrics/melody/instrumental) without re-generating the whole song.
  • High audio quality: 48kHz stereo, coherent tracks up to about 10 minutes.
  • Stem Separation 2.0 — export tracks (vocals/bass/drums/other) with phase coherence for your DAW.
  • Style references, remix, a session timeline editor, voice control.
  • A licensed platform with UMG (2026): legal remixes and artist voices inside the walled garden.

Get started in 5 minutes

  1. Open udio.com and sign up (there's a free tier with daily credits).
  2. Describe the genre/mood/lyrics and generate a track; use "extend" to grow its length.
  3. To fix something, select the problem fragment in the spectrum and apply Magic Edit (inpainting); export stems for your DAW.

When to use it and when not to

  • ✅ Use it if you want maximum control over the sound, targeted section fixes and stems to mix in a DAW.
  • ✅ Use it if clean licensing (the UMG deal) and studio-grade vocals matter to you.
  • ❌ Skip it → go with "Suno" if you care more about "a song in a minute", a big community and a built-in Studio DAW.
  • ❌ Skip it → go with "Mureka" if your priority is non-English vocals and a developer API to embed.

The honest price

A free tier with daily credits; paid plans add more generations, longer tracks, stems and commercial rights. The licensed UMG platform is a separate subscription with no downloading or publishing outside it. Exact figures are on the provider's site and change over time.

Pitfalls

  • The community and the pile of tutorials are smaller than Suno's — the learning curve is steeper.
  • Licensed UMG content lives in a walled garden: you can't download it or post it elsewhere.
  • The best quality and longer tracks are on paid plans; the free tier runs out of credits fast.
  • Inpainting takes a good ear and several passes — this is a producer's tool, not a one-button one.

🤖 Prompt accelerator

"I'm finishing a track in Udio for <a video/release>. Help me: 1) build the style prompt (genre, BPM, vocals, references); 2) plan the structure and figure out where to apply inpainting/Magic Edit to fix a weak fragment ; 3) work out how to export stems and what to mix in the DAW. Give me a rights checklist, since I'm planning commercial use."
