Anthropic donates MCP to the Linux Foundation

What happened

On 9 December 2025 Anthropic donated the Model Context Protocol to the newly formed Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation (Anthropic). The foundation's co-founders are Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, with support from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg. Alongside MCP, goose (Block) and AGENTS.md (OpenAI) joined the foundation.

In a single year MCP became one of the fastest-growing open projects in AI: first-class support in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Gemini, Copilot and VS Code (Linux Foundation).

Why it matters

A protocol controlled by a single vendor is a risk for everyone building on it. Vendor-neutral governance removes that fear: MCP is now "USB-C for AI" with a guarantee that the standard won't be turned against the ecosystem. It's telling that competitors (Anthropic and OpenAI) became co-founders of the same foundation.

What it means for vibe coding

Investment in MCP servers and integrations is protected: the protocol isn't going anywhere and won't go paid. If you've been putting off writing an MCP server for your tool — it's now the safest bet in the agentic ecosystem.
