vidIQ

What it is and why you need it

vidIQ is a growth tool for YouTube (and partly social media): it suggests topics and trends, picks SEO titles and tags, analyzes competitors and outliers (videos that performed way above a channel's average). Grab it when you're growing a YouTube channel and want to make decisions from data instead of guesswork: what to film, what to call it, which tags to use.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Install the vidIQ browser extension and sign up at vidiq.com (there's a free plan). Connect your YouTube channel.
  2. Keyword research. Type in a topic → vidIQ shows search volume, competition and a Score (whether it's worth going after).
  3. Competitor analysis. Open a competitor's channel → the extension shows their tags, upload frequency, average views, and outliers — which videos took off.
  4. Ideas (AI). The Daily Ideas section / AI topic generator feeds you topics tailored to your channel based on your niche and current trends.
  5. Titles and tags. Before publishing, run your title through vidIQ's suggestions and build a set of relevant tags (it highlights the ones that strengthen SEO).
  6. Optimization on the fly. On the video upload page, the extension gives you a live SEO checklist (description, tags, thumbnail).
  7. Tracking. Watch your keyword positions and channel dynamics in the dashboard.
  8. Wire it into production: topics from vidIQ → filming → clipping in Opus Clip → posting.

Ready-made recipe/combo

Data-driven content strategy: used Keyword Research to find 5 topics with high volume and low competition → studied competitor outliers in those topics (what landed) → filmed a video on the best topic → picked the title and tags with vidIQ → published with the SEO checklist all green → sent the long video to Opus Clip for Shorts to get extra reach → checked keyword positions a week later and doubled down on what worked.

What it costs (honestly)

The logic: a free plan/extension with basic suggestions. Paid tiers (Pro/Boost) give you more ideas, deeper competitor/outlier analysis, AI tools. The best stuff is behind the paywall. Billing is in foreign currency. Exact numbers are on vidIQ's site and change over time.

When it fits / when it doesn't

  • Fits: you're growing a YouTube channel; you want data behind your decisions (topics/SEO/competitors); you want outlier analysis; you're a beginner or intermediate.
  • Doesn't fit: you don't use YouTube (it's built around it); you expect guaranteed views (these are hypotheses, not magic); you only need analytics for your own channel (YouTube Studio is enough).

Risks and responsibility

vidIQ's recommendations are hypotheses, not a guarantee of reach: test them in practice. Don't copy someone else's content verbatim when analyzing competitors (copyright). If your videos are ads, label them through ORD. See the section disclaimer.

🤖 Prompt helper

You are a YouTube strategist working with vidIQ data. My niche is "{niche}", my channel is {size/topic}. Help me with: (1) which 10 topics to check via Keyword Research and what criteria to filter by (Score/volume/competition); (2) how to read competitor outliers and what to take from them; (3) a formula for a strong title for YouTube search; (4) an SEO optimization checklist to run before publishing.
