What it does
Gems are custom "versions of Gemini for a topic". Google ships a ready-made set of its own, and it's the fastest way to get a specialized mode with no configuration:
- Learning coach — breaks a hard topic down into steps you can follow.
- Brainstormer — a firehose of ideas for your task.
- Writing editor — fixes grammar, style and the structure of a text.
- Career guide — career advice and a development plan.
- Coding partner — writes, explains and debugs code.
How to set it up
- Open gemini.google.com → Explore Gems on the left.
- Under "Premade by Google", pick the expert you need → start the chat.
- Works on both the free and the paid Gemini plan.
When to use it
- ✅ You need a ready mode right now: unpack a topic, throw around ideas, proofread a text.
- ✅ You don't feel like writing instructions — just open it and go.
- ❌ If you need an expert tuned to your specifics with your own files, build a custom Gem (see the neighbouring card).
Example
Turn on Learning coach and type: "Explain how OAuth2 works as if I were 15, then give me 3 quiz questions." You get a step-by-step explanation in a teaching format rather than a dry reference page.
