AI brainrot as a culture shift

What it is

AI brainrot is an umbrella term for generated content that is deliberately absurd, hypnotic and brain-melting: endless strange clips, creature memes, surreal mash-ups. It is not a bug but a distinct, self-aware genre (Italian brainrot is its flagship).

Where it came from

  • The word brainrot (Oxford's word of the year for 2024) described the decay that comes from endless scrolling.
  • Cheap generation supplied the fuel: absurdity can be stamped out on a conveyor belt with no idea behind it.
  • In 2025 brainrot and slop merged into a single cultural phenomenon of "AI content made purely to be stared at".

Why it took off

  • Short-video algorithms reward retention — absurdity holds attention better than "normal" does.
  • Endless remixability: one template spawns thousands of variations.
  • Post-ironic humor: "so dumb it's funny" is the native language of a generation raised on memes.

How to use it today

  • Understand the attention mechanics: absurdity plus repetition plus a recognizable template equals virality (which also applies to "normal" content).
  • Brainrot as a deliberate device inside entertainment content is fine; as your entire strategy it is a dead end.
  • Do not confuse brainrot with value: being addictive is not usefulness and is not a loyal audience.

What to watch out for

  • This is the peak of "slop" culture: reach is easy to catch and your brand is just as easy to cheapen.
  • Its effect on young audiences (speech, attention span) is a live worry for parents and teachers.
  • Brainrot trends burn out in weeks — build on an understanding of the mechanics, not on a specific meme.
