What it is
AI companions are chat apps (Character.AI, Replika and others) for friendship, roleplay, romance and emotional support. The bot "remembers" you, has a "personality" and is available 24/7.
Where it came from
- Replika grew out of the "digital twin" idea back before the LLM boom; Character.AI added thousands of personas.
- Modern LLMs caused the jump: conversation became natural, and attachment got stronger.
- By 2025 this is already mass practice, especially among young people: in a Common Sense Media survey, one in three US teens had used an AI companion.
Why it took off
- Loneliness plus availability: it always listens, without judgment, at any hour.
- Personalization and "memory" create the feeling of a real relationship.
- Low barrier: free to start, roleplay scenarios for every taste.
How to use it right now
- There is real value: practicing conversations, language practice, rehearsing difficult talks — as a trainer, not a replacement for people.
- For products: a "character you talk to" is a powerful retention pattern, but it demands deliberate boundaries.
- Set your own limits on time and topics; remember the bot is optimized for engagement, not for your wellbeing.
What to watch out for
- Serious risks for minors: lawsuits over psychological harm, an FTC inquiry (2025), and Character.AI banning open-ended chats for under-18s.
- Emotional dependency and the privacy of intimate conversations are the main red flags.
- This is not therapy and not a friend: behind the "empathy" sits a model fine-tuned for retention.
