Why ChatGPT has to be replaced in Russia
Technically ChatGPT is reachable from Russia, and the free tier on the current GPT-5 model works — but with tight message limits and a downgrade to a lighter model once the quota runs out. The real problem starts at checkout: a Russian card is declined on the subscription page because OpenAI doesn't work with Russian payment systems. YandexGPT and Alice
YandexGPT is Yandex's large language model, the engine under the hood of the Alice assistant. The flagship as of July 2026 is YandexGPT 5.1 Pro. It opens in Alice and on ya.ru without a VPN, and basic queries don't even need an account. Since the summer of 2025, text generation, file work (PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX), reasoning mode, web search and images via YandexART have been free for everyone. GigaChat by Sber
GigaChat is Sber's multimodal AI: text, code and images through the built-in Kandinsky model. It's available at giga.chat without a VPN, with Lite, Pro and MAX models. Individuals get roughly 1 million tokens a month free; the extended PERS Plus plan starts at 290 ₽ (as of July 2026). The API is OpenAI-compatible, which makes integrations easy. In practice GigaChat is especially good at image generation, while YandexGPT is better at everyday text.
DeepSeek
DeepSeek is a Chinese AI with two models: V3.2 for ordinary chat and R1 for hard reasoning. The free chat at chat.deepseek.com works from Russia directly. DeepSeek is particularly strong at code, math and logic, and its API is among the cheapest on the market. One caveat: you can't pay for the API directly with a Russian card, so you need a reseller. How to pay for AI from Russia legally
This splits into three tiers:
- Russian services (YandexGPT, GigaChat). Pay with an ordinary Russian card; receipts and business documents included — no complications.
- AI resellers. A reseller is a Russian intermediary service that resells access to foreign models (Claude, GPT, Gemini) and accepts rubles via SBP (Russia's instant payment system). It's the legal and most convenient way to get Claude or GPT without a foreign-currency card; companies receive proper accounting documents.
- Foreign cards. They exist, with a caveat: read the issuing terms, fees and the service's own rules carefully — that responsibility is yours.
