What happened
In July 2026 OpenAI announced it is shutting down ChatGPT Atlas — its own browser with ChatGPT at the core, launched on 21 October 2025 (TechTimes). The product lasted less than nine months.
Atlas offered browser memories, an "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar and an agentic mode that carried out tasks on the web. Those capabilities now move into ChatGPT Work — a desktop app that combines ChatGPT, Codex and the browser features; a standalone browser as a product was deemed redundant (Techzine).
Why it matters
This is the first notable "switched off" product of the big AI wave: OpenAI's bet that "the AI browser is its own category" did not pay off. Users would not swap browsers just to get an assistant — the assistant came to their working environment instead. That is a signal for anyone building "yet another browser with AI".
What it means for vibe coding
If your workflow was wired into Atlas, migrate to ChatGPT Work early rather than waiting for the shutdown. The broader lesson: be careful with products that are wrappers around platforms; the platform core absorbs the functionality fast, and you are left moving your data.
