What it is
Tools that read a job posting and tune your resume to it: they pick keywords, format for ATS (automated screening systems) and quantify achievements. Rezi, Teal, Jobscan, Huntr, Careerflow.
Where it came from
Big companies rolled out ATS filters to dig out from under the flood of applications. Candidates answered with AI — optimizing resumes for the algorithm. GenAI in 2023-25 made this mainstream: minutes to groom a resume for every single opening.
Why it took off
70% of companies use AI-powered ATS; a 2025 Harvard Business School study found that ATS automatically rejects up to 88% of qualified candidates because they do not match the algorithm. 95% of recruiters search on LinkedIn. An "arms race" emerged: AI screens, AI beats the screening.
How to use it today
- Tune your resume to a specific opening (keywords from the description) instead of sending one template everywhere.
- Keep an ATS-friendly format: no tables, columns or images that break the parser.
- Use AI as a draft and a check, but keep the facts and achievements your own and real.
- Polish your LinkedIn — people look at it before the interview.
What to watch out for
The flip side: 53% of hiring managers in late 2025 rejected applicants they suspected of a "fully AI-written" application. ATS are learning to catch generic text. Do not lie on your resume — AI polish must not turn into invention.
