What it is
An AI SDR (Sales Development Representative) is an agent that takes over the top of the funnel: it finds ICP leads, enriches the data, writes personalized first touches (email/LinkedIn), reacts to replies and books a meeting for a human rep. The human steps in once the lead is warm.
Where it came from
The category was staked out in 2023-24 by Artisan ("Stop hiring humans"), 11x, Relevance AI and Qualified's Piper. By 2025 the focus had shifted from templated sequences to agency: the system itself decides who to touch, when and through which channel, and learns from every reply.
Why it took off
The market is valued at $4.12B (2025) and projected to reach $15B by 2030 (CAGR around 29.5%). The driver is personalization at scale: one agent prepares hundreds of relevant touches a day. AI adoption in sales grew from 39% to 81% in two years.
How to use it today
- Do not throw people out — hand the agent the top-of-funnel grind (research, enrichment, drafts) and leave closing to humans.
- Give it a clear ICP and tone of voice; forbid it from hallucinating facts about the target company.
- A/B test the touches and watch your domain reputation (aggressive volume means spam filters and a banned domain).
- Connect it to the CRM so leads are not lost at the agent-to-human handoff.
What to watch out for
Cold outreach is regulated (CAN-SPAM/GDPR, and in Russia federal law 152-FZ plus advertising rules). Mass AI mailing with no personalization destroys both domain and brand reputation. The success metric is not "messages sent" but meetings booked and conversion.
