What it is
An answer engine (Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode) synthesizes an answer from many sources into one conversational text with links — instead of "here are 10 blue links, figure it out yourself". Search turns into a dialogue.
Where it came from
Perplexity (2022, Aravind Srinivas) turned the "answer engine" into a mass-market product; OpenAI added search to ChatGPT, and Google responded with AI Overviews and AI Mode. 2024–25 is the moment when "just ask the AI" became the default habit for research queries.
Why it took off
Perplexity: 780M queries/month by May 2025 (+239% year over year), 45M+ active users. 58.5% of US searches are now zero-click — people get their answer without leaving the results page. Speed and "an answer right away, with receipts" beat manually surfing through tabs.
How to apply it now
- For yourself: use an answer engine for research — but check the sources (the model can hallucinate).
- For business: think about how these engines cite you (see the GEO/AEO card).
- Content strategy: fewer sprawling SEO walls of text, more direct, factual answers to specific questions.
- Watch referral traffic from Perplexity/ChatGPT in your analytics — it is growing.
What to watch out for
The drop in search traffic to websites is a real threat to media and content businesses (zero-click). Answers are sometimes inaccurate; when a mistake is costly, open the primary source. Monetization and attribution in answer engines are still immature.
