Where it came from
Platforms built generators in: AI stickers in WhatsApp/Instagram (Meta), Emoji Kitchen and emoji generation in the Google and Apple ecosystems, sticker bots in Telegram. Separately there is the "turn me into a sticker pack" meme on Nano Banana/GPT Image.
Why it took off
- Play and self-expression. "Me as a set of stickers" gets shared in chats instantly.
- Zero barrier. It is built into an app the person already opens every day.
