What it is
Resolution upscaling where AI does not just "stretch" the picture but builds in believable detail (skin pores, stray hairs, fabric texture, brickwork). Two camps have formed: restoration/fidelity (bring it back as it was) and creative upscaling / "hallucination" (invent new detail).
Where it came from
The "creative upscale" theme was set by Magnific in late 2023, followed by Krea AI, Topaz (Gigapixel/Photo AI — the fidelity camp) and upscaling nodes in ComfyUI. By 2025 "it was mush, now it is 8K with detail" had become the standard finishing step for any visual.
Why it took off
- It rescues old or weak source files and brings the output of early models up to print quality.
- Viral before/after. The dramatic difference performs beautifully on social media.
- Every pipeline needs it: product shots, posters, concept art, restoration — the finishing step is the same.
How to use it today
- You need fidelity (a person's face, a document) → Topaz / "restore" modes: identity stays intact.
- You need wow-level detail (concept work, art) → Magnific/Krea AI, dial the "creativity" slider.
- Free or local → upscaling nodes in ComfyUI. What you get: a sharp high-resolution image good enough for print and large screens.
What to watch out for
- High "creativity" changes identity: it can repaint a face or an ethnicity — keep it low for real people.
- The added detail is the model's invention; upscaling is unacceptable for documentary work or evidence.
