When to use it
When you're launching a product, project or channel and you need a name, but all your brain offers is the obvious. The role is naming specialist. Result: 15 options grouped by type, each with its meaning spelled out, plus a top-3 shortlist with reasoning. Trademark clearance and domains you check separately.
The prompt (copy and paste)
You are a naming specialist. Come up with a name.
WHAT WE'RE NAMING: "<product/project/channel>". WHAT IT DOES AND WHY IT MATTERS: "<what it does, what makes it valuable>". WHO IT'S FOR: <audience>. BRAND TONE: <formal / playful / premium / warm>. LANGUAGE: <Russian / Latin script / mixed>.
WHAT I DON'T WANT: <cliches, anglicisms, etc. — if any>.
First list 4-5 criteria for a good name in this case (short, easy to pronounce, conveys the essence, doesn't look like the competitors <list them if you know them>).
Then give 15 options grouped by type: 1) descriptive; 2) metaphor/image; 3) compound/blended; 4) invented/evocative; 5) short/abstract.
For each, 3-5 words: what it means and what feeling it creates. Flag any word with unwanted connotations.
Finish with a top-3 shortlist with reasoning and what to check next (trademark register, free domain/handle, how it sounds out loud).
Filled-in example
Naming: an app for 5-minute meditations. Essence: quick calm during the day. For: busy city dwellers aged 25-40. Tone: warm, calm. Language: mixed. Don't want: the words "zen", "harmony", "mindfulness" — overused.
Expected AI response: the criteria; then 15 names by type — descriptive ("FiveMinutes"), metaphors ("Hush", "Noon"), compounds ("Quiet. So"), evocative ("Mira", "Lulla"), abstract ("Oval"). Each with its meaning and feeling, plus a warning where something is ambiguous. Top-3 shortlist plus "check: trademark in the software class, .ru/.com domain, social handle, and whether it sounds ambiguous out loud".
Variations
- Domain-first. "Only give options that are likely to have a short domain free (.ru/.io)."
- Origin story. "For the top 3, invent a name story for the landing page."
- Stress test. "How might customers shorten, distort or mangle these names?"
Pro tips
- The AI generates candidates but does NOT check legal clearance or availability: before you commit, run everything through the trademark register (Rospatent/WIPO), domain lookups and social handles — a beautiful name that's already taken is useless.
- Test out loud and over the phone: the name has to be easy to say and easy to write down by ear without asking twice.
- Go for volume first, then narrow: ask for 15+, keep 3, test them on 5-10 people from your audience — their first reaction matters more than the model's taste.
