What it is
The moment when fully AI-generated music stopped being a novelty and went commercial mainstream: tracks with no living performer rack up millions of plays and land on the charts.
Where it came from
The quality jump came from Suno and Udio (a whole song from a text prompt). In 2025 it reached the charts: AI act Breaking Rust took Billboard Country Digital Song Sales to number one with "Walk My Walk" (per press reports, the first AI number one on a Billboard chart; earlier, Xania Monet, built on Suno, had already charted).
Why it took off
- A full song from one line. Vocals, arrangement, master — in a minute, with no studio and no musicians.
- Platform economics. Suno turned into a business with hundreds of millions in revenue and millions of paying users — a powerful content flywheel.
- Virality plus chart mechanics. Digital sales and streams of AI tracks pump up positions and make the news.
How to use it today
- A full track: Suno or Udio (
country, raspy male vocal, lyrics about ...); instrumental background music — same tools or Mureka. - Cover art — see "AI covers and posters"; release through a distributor to the streaming services. What you get: a ready track, jingle or background music for videos and releases.
What to watch out for
- Rights and provenance. Suno and Udio have faced lawsuits from labels; ownership of AI music is a grey area. For commercial use — take a commercial plan and tread carefully.
- Transparency. Platforms and listeners increasingly demand AI labelling; passing a track off as a "real band" is a reputational risk (see the Velvet Sundown case).
- Sounding like a specific artist or voice is a separate risk (see "Voice clones").
