The Sora app & AI-video feed

What it is

A social network where the whole feed is generated video, including video with your own face in it (the "cameo" feature). The phenomenon isn't the Sora 2 model (that lives under "Tools") — it's that a standalone AI-video feed app instantly became a viral product.

Where it came from

In late September 2025 OpenAI shipped the Sora iOS app built on Sora 2 — invite-only, initially in the US and Canada. Despite the invites, on 3 October 2025 it hit #1 in the US App Store (roughly 164k downloads in the first two days, a million in under five). Android followed later.

Why it took off

  • "Put yourself in any video." A cameo with your own face is an instant viral hook.
  • A TikTok-shaped feed. A finished clip goes straight into the scroll — a loop of make it → post it → do it again.
  • Invite-only scarcity heated up demand (FOMO).
  • Sound in the shot makes clips feel real.

How to use it today

  1. Social content and memes: generate short clips with sound right in the app.
  2. Cameo — only with your own face or with consent; for a brand, use branded scenes.
  3. Keep serious production on stable APIs (Veo/Kling/Runway) — social apps and access rules change.

What to watch out for

  • Deepfake ethics at maximum. Someone else's face in a cameo without consent is a direct reputational and legal risk.
  • Availability is unstable: access to the Sora product reportedly changed in 2026 — don't build a business process on a single app.
  • Visible and invisible watermarks and provenance markers — factor them in when republishing.
